The Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) called on authorities to ensure that early elections are secure, free and fair, in accordance with the rule of law and fundamental freedoms.
The Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) has issued the following statement regarding the announcement calling for early elections in Turkey:
“We had publicly stated that our expectation was for elections to be held on the scheduled date next year so that economic reforms would be prioritized and predictability for business decisions be maintained. Nevertheless, we hope that snap elections will yield the best results for our country.
“It is essential that the election is democratic, free and fair. For the first time, Presidential and Parliamentary elections will be held under the new constitutional framework and under emergency rule. Therefore, the state and all political parties have a great deal of responsibility to ensure that elections are secure, free and fair, in accordance with the rule of law and fundamental freedoms. It is important that campaigning in a competitive environment does not exasperate polarization and that campaign rhetoric is tolerant and mutually respectful. Moreover, it is critical that the election process does not affect our international relations and our relationship with the EU.
“Current global economic developments require focus on preserving economic stability, even during elections. Policies that promote macroeconomic stability and minimize financial risk are essential.
“Following the elections, we call for a renewed focus on reforms that will strengthen Turkey’s democracy, economy, society and place in the world. A country that has implemented reforms in these areas, that is strong democratically and guarantees fundamental freedoms will be far more effective globally and economically competitive.”
